“The two-million-dollar finder’s fee you promised.”

“And which can still be yours. Yes.”

“So, Lord Findrake—”

“It isn’t a good idea to talk about Lord Findrake, Miss Barclay. You should forget him. Let’s talk about how we might help each other.”

“Why isn’t it a good idea to talk about him?”

“Because fanatics are better left alone.”

“Who’s the fanatic? Findrake? The people around him? Who?”

The color had returned to Elliott St. John’s face, and a hint of the old strength to his voice. He lifted his watch, pointed to the time. “I should get back. She’ll be wanting your answer.”

“Your fellow Council member.”

“That’s right.”

“Does she have a name?”

“She does.”

Irritated by his flippancy, Bethany grows curt. “Let’s get back to Findrake.”

“Lord Findrake presents a considerable problem. For us and for you. In his day, he was formidable, and he’s still dangerous. He still has the old contacts. He calls in very grimy favors from very grimy people. We can’t control him. He won’t even meet with us. He served on the Council for decades. He was the Lord Protector for more than twenty years. That’s what we call our, ah, our CEO. Goes back to the time of Cromwell—”

“I get the reference. Tell me about Findrake.”

“I told you. He’s a fanatic for the cause. Not just a believer. A fanatic. We’ve all done things—we on the Council, the fools over in the Garden—all of us have occasionally made decisions that would be difficult to defend in the light of day. Findrake was worse. He was violent. Irrationally so. Blowing up churches in the 1960s, not to scare black people away from the civil rights struggle but to scare them away from going to church. That kind of thing.”

Bethany digested this. On another occasion she would like to learn more about him. For now, however—

“And how does this relate to Annabelle?”
